Presentation Description: The History, Science, and Art of Kaleidoscopes

As young children, many of us had a kaleidoscope. In the early 1800s, kaleidoscopes were invented by Sir David Brewster. During "The Fancy Period" (1840-70s) in decorating they were used in architecture, wallpaper, and floor coverings. Kaleidoscopes then became inexpensive toys made from tin and cardboard. In the 1970s, kaleidoscopes were revived as an art form of finely crafted instruments.
Join us for a journey to discover the history of the kaleidoscope and see samples of kaleidoscopes from many artists. Steve and Peggy Kittelson have been creating handcrafted kaleidoscopes since 1986 with the goal to create unique and distinctive scopes that are beautiful to look at and pleasing to touch and hold. They are active educators who open their studio and give demonstrations on the magic and science of kaleidoscopes to students of all ages.

Cost: $195, includes the cost of supplies
This is your opportunity to build a kaleidoscope using a furnished wooden barrel (hand turned by Steve Kittelson) and pre-cut front surface mirror. Precise mirror cutting will be demonstrated and different mirror configurations will be discussed. The kaleidoscope will have a 2-mirror system, 6-point star mandala, and the pieces used to create the image will be flame-sculpted glass pieces, twisted colored wire, beads, and found objects. If possible, there will be a demonstration of turning a wooden barrel. Peggy and Steve Kittelson have been making kaleidoscopes for 32 years, selling their work at Iowa Artisans Gallery and other galleries in the U.S., Japan, at art fairs, at their studio, and online. Their work is in several museums in Japan and many private collections. Their work has been in many museum exhibits, including the American Folk Art Museum in New York City.
