ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Vera Ranguelova is an encaustic artist whose work explores memory, place, and cultural heritage through the luminous medium of molten beeswax, damar resin, and natural pigments. Layering wax with mixed media such as plaster, fabric, and organic powders, she creates richly textured surfaces that invite touch and reflection.
Her paintings often weave together Bulgarian folk motifs with contemporary imagery of Midwest landscapes, architecture, and everyday life, capturing a dialogue between tradition and the present.
Originally from Bulgaria and now based in Iowa City, Vera began working in encaustic in 2017 and has since developed a distinctive style that blends bold texture, warmth, and symbolism.
Her work has been exhibited in regional galleries, including NuboNiche Gallery (Seattle), Nuwave Gallery (Ellensburg), and in community showcases such as the Iowa City Gallery Walk. She is currently represented by Iowa Artisans Gallery in Iowa City.
