ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My name is Colton Bean and I am a local LGBTQ+ artist born and raised in Southeast Iowa. Creativity and the need to be different has always influenced my everyday lift. Special Kind of Twisted started because of the desire to use my creativity, stand out and to make people smile. 

I grew up in a country home outside of Ainsworth, Iowa. I lived there through my years at Highland Community Schools until I went to college for four years at the University of Northern Iowa receiving a B.A. in Biology. For about three years, horticulture became a major influence in my career and with my art.

In January of 2020, I wanted to start a hobby related to my profession due to my knowledge of plants and I also wanted to plant trees in my dad’s bare yard. Seeing some wire tree projects online, I tried to make my own.

Some years have gone by and every tree made was intended to tell a story, warm peoples’ hearts and to be one of a kind. No trees are the same, no one’s story is the same. I make trees based on either real tree species, a fantasy, specific concepts, and special requests. Special Kind of Twisted was created because I wanted to make people happy.
