ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Lori Bonz was born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa.  Growing up she always had a creative side and tried a variety of mediums, but her love of clay ended up being the strongest connection.

Lori attended the University of Northern Iowa on a full ride scholarship, completing a BFA in ceramics as well as a BA in Art Education.  She went on the complete a 30 year career with Des Moines Public Schools as an art teacher.  Throughout her career as a teacher, Lori displayed her love of art through a variety of art shows and a few galleries.  Clay has always allowed her an infinite amount of possibilities.

The inspiration behind Lori’s pieces is finding a balance between rhythmic movement, negative space, and the exploration of balance.  Each one of her pieces is low fired with multiple applications of underglazes and glazes.  Lori creates some pieces strictly by hand and others that are wheel thrown.

Lori takes pride in that her art is constantly evolving.  Currently, she is working on a series of wheel thrown sculpted faces.  Each face evokes a different feeling and often has its own personality.  You can find her pieces featured at boutiques and galleries around Iowa.

She also travels to various art shows throughout the year in and around the Midwest.  Some of her customers tell her that her pottery spoke to them, and gave them a sense of calm.  She truly enjoys sharing her talents of pottery with those who feel a connection to art; as all forms of art are intensely personal to the viewer.

Lori’s studio is located in her home in the Beaverdale neighborhood of Des Moines, Iowa.
