ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Most of my work is wheel thrown functional stoneware. I like the challenge of working in a traditional style, while bringing a personal approach of motifs, surface designs, patterns and forms. Teaching from time to time helps me stick to the basics in my own work. I try to make pots that can be appreciated for their usefulness, simplicity and appearance. Nothing has defined my life more than clay, nor has given me more satisfaction.
Joel received his B.A. in Art Education in 1971 at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL and his M.S. in Ceramics in 1974 from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
