Nick DeVries received his B.A. in Painting and Ceramics from St. Johns University in Collegeville, MN. During his college years, Nick spent the summers working for St. Joseph potter Jim Loso, who helped him developed his sense of design and balance. Nick is currently the senior potter for Grey Fox Pottery and Custom Ceramics in Arden Hills, MN, where he maintains a personal studio and continues to make new work.
MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES
Most of Nick's work is currently wheel thrown, done in white stoneware and porcelain, and on occasion he works with stoneware. Most of his work is high-fired in a gas kiln. His glazes are primarily matte and ash, generally sprayed to achieve uniformity and allow him the ability to layer, which creates complexity in coloration and surface. Nick's work is influenced by functional tradition, but concepts of form and design are a major consideration in the creative process. On occasion, to break the routine a bit, Nick will dabble in Raku, but the majority of his time is spent with high-fire porcelain and stoneware.
